Fairfax, VA – We are deeply saddened by the news of Congressman Gerry Connolly’s passing. On behalf of the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, staff, and the many people whose lives he touched through decades of public service
Gerry dedicated more than 30 years to serving the people of Northern Virginia, both on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and as a Representative of the 11th District of the U.S. Congress.. Throughout his career, he consistently championed causes that uplifted communities because he understood what was at stake — and he fought for it every step of the way.
One of the issues Gerry cared most deeply about was affordable housing. During his time as Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, he helped launch the “Penny for Affordable Housing” initiative, which directed a portion of local tax revenue toward building and preserving housing that working families, seniors, and others in need could afford. Between 2006 and 2009, that program generated nearly $100 million — a level of local commitment to housing that was groundbreaking at the time.
In 2005, Gerry convened the Affordable Housing Preservation Action Committee to bring more focus and coordination to the county’s efforts. Even when budgets were tight, Gerry remained a strong voice for those who often go unheard — people struggling to find or keep a home in our community. His leadership helped set a long-term vision that still shapes housing policy in Fairfax County today. He understood early on that housing isn’t just about buildings — it’s about stability, health, opportunity, and dignity.
We will remember Gerry for his integrity, his persistence, and his deep belief in public service. His legacy is all around us — in the homes that exist because of his efforts, in the policies he shaped, and in the lives of countless individuals and families who are better off because he
cared. He will be deeply missed. Our deepest gratitude to him and his family for all their years of service.
