Empowering the Next Generation: NVAHA’s Rising Housing Leaders Program

This post was written by Hanna Metuda, Director of Policy and Programs.

A few weeks ago, we had the privilege of honoring Michelle Krocker, the Founding Executive Director of NVAHA, and commemorated her contributions to the affordable housing industry. Again, we express our sincere gratitude to all those who supported us and joined us in acknowledging not only Michelle’s accomplishments but also the collective efforts of the leaders who have been instrumental in advancing affordable housing in NoVa. We are also deeply thankful to our generous sponsors, including an anonymous donor whose significant contribution greatly benefits our Rising Housing Leaders program. Given these recent developments, we’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on NVAHA’s Rising Housing Leaders program, what it is, and what sets it apart from other young professional groups.

Rising Housing Leaders is a network for professionals in their early careers with two to seven years of experience in the housing industry or housing adjacent industry.

NoVa Centric:

The Rising Housing Leaders program is distinguished by its emphasis on addressing the specific challenges and complexities around affordable housing in Northern Virginia. With this focus, the program equips young professionals with the specialized knowledge, skills, and resources required to make a meaningful impact in creating and sustaining affordable housing options for vulnerable populations.

Networking and Collaboration:

One of the most significant benefits of joining Rising Housing Leaders is the opportunity to build a strong professional network within the industry. Through networking events, members can connect with peers and established professionals, fostering meaningful relationships that can propel their careers forward.

Professional Development

The program places a strong emphasis on empowering its members to take an active role in their own professional development. By providing a platform and a supportive environment, the program encourages early-career professionals to seize opportunities and embrace new challenges

Self-Run Program

Currently, NVAHA organizes monthly meetings, but as the program evolves, monthly meetings will be organized to allow members to shape the agenda based on their individual interests and needs. This approach ensures that meetings are tailored to address the specific challenges, trends, and topics relevant to the diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise of the rising housing leaders.

What’s Next?

In June, we are planning two in-person events: the Innovative Housing Showcase led by HUD and a speaker-led tour at an affordable housing project that prioritizes sustainability through its transit-oriented design in NoVa.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming one of our Rising Housing Leaders, we are currently accepting applications! This program is offered at no cost to housing or housing-adjacent professionals with 2 to 7 years of experience. Follow this link for additional information, or contact hanna.metuda@nvaha.org.
